Originally thought to be limited to the isolated bite of a deer tick, Lyme disease has been found to be transmissible among humans, such that its incidence in the human population is now at epidemic proportions. While the disease may begin with the invasion of a spirochete, the body’s ability to fend off this attack depends on the health of the immune system as well as the diagnostic ability of the health care professional. So many body systems become involved in dealing with the disease, that an integrative approach is essential to defeating it.
