Jonna's Body
Jonna's Body by Jonna Tamases

Jonna Tamases is an extraordinary performer who inspires wonderment and zest for life in every moment of this strikingly original, hilarious, and incredibly uplifting show. She began writing with the idea to create a fun, totally new performance that challenges despair.

The show has built a huge following with its recent 7-week run at LA's Odyssey Theater, as well as performances around the US. She works with Wellness Communities, universities and hospitals to offer a performance followed by a group discussion. The response has been tremendous: audiences are brought to their feet, transported by Jonna's humor and tenderness.

Liz Lipski and Jonna TamasesA riotously entertaining, profoundly moving hour-long show that has audiences on their feet! Get ready for a whopping thrill-ride inside the walls of Hotel Jonna, where the quirky, loveable residents are in a state of hilarious agitation - they're cramped up, worn out, and sounding off. But that's just the beginning... When two undercover assassins move in, the whole joint is swept up in a heart-pounding battle that will leave you breathless with laughter and joy.

Critics claim that this set of international guidelines is threatening to our health freedom.

Codex Alimentarius is Latin for "food code." Originating in 1962, it was formed by the United Nations to set global standards governing every aspect of food production, distribution and trade. However, it's starting to become an issue of some controversy. Supporters claim it is a benign and necessary set of guidelines that facilitate the goals of international trade. They say that the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) is facilitated via this international "food code," because it sets trustworthy standards insuring the quality of food products we import and export.

However, there is a growing body of critics who believe that the Codex Alimentarius is over-stepping its mandate, and it actually threatens to dramatically reduce our health freedoms. Critics also charge that we, health-conscious consumers, will lose our ability to purchase many of the organic foods, nutritional supplements and herbs we take for granted today. They warn that the 60% of the world's population that depend upon herbal medicines will not be able to afford the pharmaceutical drugs that will replace them. The new laws requiring genetically modified crops, pesticides, hormones and antibiotics in foods will be cost-prohibitive to people living in developing nations, and that billions of people may die as a result of these policies. They say that the new guidelines are being influenced by large food, chemical, agricultural, and pharmaceutical companies who will profit from the changes.

In the United Stated our healthcare rights and freedoms are currently protected by a Federal law enacted in 1994 called Dietary Supplement Health and Education Act (DSHEA). DSHEA considers nutritional supplements and herbs to be foods and as such, there is no upper limit on dosages. This act protects our rights as consumers and guarantees the rights we currently have. As long as this Act remains in effect we probably don't have to worry much about regarding the restrictive nature of Codex Alimentarius.

What's the problem?

Critics of the current situation believe that there is a good chance that without consumer participation, the US Congress will adopt Codex Alimentarius for our import and export standards, and act to repeal or significantly weaken DSHEA. In fact there are several bills in Congress right now that attempt to weaken DSHEA. Why would they do this? Because the big winners are the large corporations that are able to meet the new standards and/or own patents protected and promoted by Codex Alimentarius. Critics say that these large companies are lobbying Congress for these changes, while assuring the public that nothing much is going to change and we shouldn't be alarmed.

The question is: Is this alarmist claim true? Some people do get worked up over nothing and there are charges of misinformation being made by both sides. Our assessment is that this situation is worth monitoring. It's certainly logical that if there were billions of dollars to be made by large corporations that they would have a vested position in the issue. Codex Alimentarius is published so we can see what it contains, and it's now being implemented in other countries so we can see what is changing there.

Who are you going to believe, me or your own two eyes?

Here are a few facts we received from Rima Laibow, MD:

  1. Codex Alimentarius requires that all meats, poultry, fish, fruit and vegetables must be irradiated by Dec. 31, 2009.
  2. Codex Alimentarius requires that all dairy cattle are to be given Monsanto bovine growth hormone by Dec. 31, 2009.
  3. Codex Alimentarius reclassifies vitamin and mineral supplements as toxins and dramatically limits their dosage and availability.
  4. Many nations have already harmonized their laws with Codex Alimentarius making it their de facto law. This has already been approved by the European Union, Australia, New Zealand, Canada, and others.
  5. Codex Alimentarius allows significant trade sanctions to be levied against noncompliant nations.
  6. In 2005 there were five bills submitted to congress to weaken or eliminate DSHEA.

The teleseminar below is an interview with two highly qualified observers. They are well educated in the details of Codex Alimentarius, Western medicine, and the manipulation of public opinion. Check it out. Pass it along to your friends.

It was only through the awareness and actions of the American consumers that DSHEA was passed in 1994. We encourage you to read and listen to all you can about this topic and develop your own opinion.

Also known as Colitis and spastic colon, IBS affects 10 to 20 percent of all American adults.

About IBS

IBSIrritable bowel syndrome (IBS), also known as Colitis and spastic colon, affects 10 to 20 percent of all American adults and is the most common gastrointestinal complaint. Most often people with IBS experience abdominal pain and spasms, bloating, gas, constipation, diarrhea, and/or alternating diarrhea and constipation. Diarrhea alternating with constipation is the most common pattern. Sometimes people have unrelenting constipation, and that’s also called IBS. Bowel movements usually relieve the discomfort. Over the years, IBS has had a variety of names: spastic colon, spastic bowel, mucous colitis, colitis, and functional bowel disease. It accounts for 10% of all doctor’s visits and 50% of referrals to gastroenterologists. Although 75% of people who have it never seek a physician's help—they just learn to live with it. Twice as many women as men seek medical help for IBS, and it often appears in the teen years or early adulthood.

Basically your doctor will diagnose you with irritable bowel syndrome if you have intestinal issues but don’t have ulcerative colitis or Crohn’s. It’s called “functional bowel disease” because people who have irritable bowel syndrome do not have any obvious changes in bowel structure or other serious complications and rarely require hospitalization. Nonetheless, IBS can significantly restrict one's lifestyle. Most of my IBS clients know where every public restroom is in town. They can’t make morning appointments due to the unpredictability of the bowels and eating away from home can be tricky.

Anemia, weight loss, rectal bleeding, and fever are not symptoms of irritable bowel syndrome. Bowel changes accompanied by these symptoms need to be checked out by a physician to discover the cause.

IBS - Glass of MilkRather than just accepting a diagnosis, it’s in your best interest to try to figure out the underlying cause or causes of your IBS. IBS can be caused by food sensitivities, lactose intolerance, lack of beneficial probiotic bacteria, stress, infection, mind-body interaction, malabsorption of nutrients, hormonal imbalances, endometriosis, AIDs, environmental sensitivity, antibiotics, over-use of magnesium supplements and more. There is no single cause for IBS, but hopefully you can find the underlying causes for your IBS and work with them to eliminate or alleviate your IBS. Here are some suggestions to help. You’ll find many more in my book, Digestive Wellness. - by Liz Lipski, Ph.D., C.C.N.

Individual Supplements

In numerous studies, probiotic supplements have been shown to help regulate IBS and. Products with multiple strains of microbes would be best. Make sure they at least include: Lactobacilli and Bifidobacteria. Dosage: 2-6 capsules daily. I suggest these products: The Digestaguard and TPP Probiotics are comparable and can be used by most people. If you are someone who is in need of soothing, or very sensitive to foods, chemicals and your environment, try the Plantadophilus.

Digestive Enzymes:

These can significantly help reduce gas and bloating. Take 1 with each meal. I suggest TPP Digest and Digestzyme. If you are someone who is in need of soothing or very sensitive to foods, chemicals and your environment, try the DigestZyme. Otherwise, try the TPP Digest.

Soothing Herbs:

There are many herbs that help soothe the gastrointestinal tract. They can relieve discomfort, improve digestive function, and strengthens the tissues. Some of the herbs commonly used include: Marshmallow root, papaya leaf, prickly ash bark, slippery elm, DGL licorice, ginger, fennel, globe artichoke extract, aloe vera, and many more. I recommend Gastrozyme for people who are very sensitive to foods, chemicals and their environment. Otherwise, choose the TPP Gastro.

Glutamine, the most abundant amino acid in the body, is used by the digestive tract as a fuel source and for healing IBS. Dosage: 8 grams daily.

Peppermint Oil:

Peppermint oil is a muscle relaxant that is widely used in England for IBS. To get the oil into the intestines intact, use enteric coated peppermint oil. (The coating prevents it from dissolving in the stomach.). Dosage: one to two capsules daily between meals.

Calcium/Magnesium Citrate:

Anecdotally, many people have found that calcium/magnesium supplements prevent or alleviate the muscle spasms associated with IBS, as these minerals have powerful antispasmodic effects. Dosage: 500-1,000 milligrams calcium, 300-750 milligrams magnesium. Magnesium is also great for relieving digestive. Caution: too much magnesium will cause diarrhea.

About Stress

What's stressful? The answer is that it depends on you. Technically speaking stress is the altering of our chemical or physical structure due to a mental or physical event. Wow, that mouth full sounds impersonal, but we've all experienced stress and it feels very personal. That's because stress is completely personal. Because we're all different, what is stressful to one person may have no impact on someone else. So one of the first things to understand about stress is that its cause is different for everyone.Stress

Another fact about stress is that it can be caused by either positive or negative experiences. Stress caused by the experiences we like is called eustress, and stress caused by experiences we don't like is called distress. From our bodies point of view, It doesn't matter which kind of stress we're experiencing, it still physically taxes us and weakens our bodies. So for the sake of our health and quality of life we want to manage our stress and minimize it's impact.

So what can we do? Remember that stress has both a mental and physical side. The good news is that because our bodies and minds are do intimately connected we can effect the physical side by doing something with our minds, and we can effect our mental states by addressing our physical side. I recommend that you do both.

From the mental, or thinking and feeling side, you can learn how to direct your attention and manage your life so it's less stressful. There's an entire industry has been built to address this 21st century need. I recommend the stress management course that I've put together. It contains hundreds of practical suggestions for reducing the stress of your life.

There's also many things you can do from the physical side. Exercise is probably the single best thing you can do to reduce the effects of stress an strengthen yourself so you're more stress resistant.

You can find many fine products at your local health food stores and pharmacies. You can also find many sub-optimal products as well. At Innovative Healing we offer nutritional supplements as a convenience to our clients. Unfortunately even the best diets succumb to nutrient deficiencies these days. Our bodies haven’t changed over the last decades, but our food sources, food quality, shipping, soils, seeds, and farming practices are different. Because of this, I recommend that people supplement great diets, with basic nutritional supplements:

  • Multi-vitamin
  • Multi-minerals
  • Vitamin C (at least 1000-2000 mg. daily)

In addition, if you have specific health goals or needs, you can always add more, but this is the foundational plan. I’ve also listed several “stress” supplements that can help you sleep better, feel more relaxed and stay calmer.

  • Homeopathics
  • Valerian, Hops, Passionflower, either in combination or separately
  • Magnesium
  • L-theanine
  • Relora
  • 5-HTP (5-Hydroxytryptophan)
  • Zinc
  • GABA
  • Vitamin B12
  • Aroma therapy

Information about each of these is listed in detail below.

Enzyme Products

Transformation CalmZyme - This supplement contains herbs and enzymes that can help you feel calmer and can also help with troubled sleep.

TPP Adrenal Complex - The adrenals take the brunt of our stress. When our adrenals are fatigued, we feel like we are running on empty. We push ourselves with our spare-tank energy. This gentle complex helps to support and nourish the adrenals.

Transformation ExcellZyme - This supplement contains enzymes and herbs to help with memory, mind and performance, while also being a high quality antioxidant formula to support kidneys, liver and hypothalamus.

Homeopathic Remedies for Stress

Homeopathic remedies is a great first place to begin. They help restore balance gently, without negative side-effects, and inexpensively. They either work great, or not too well. They give you teensy doses (about 1 part per million) of specific substances that stimulate your body to come back into balance, much like a vaccine. These are low potency, combination remedies designed by homeopathic doctors to be used by people with no knowledge of homeopathy. For single, specific remedies, consult with a homeopath. Here are some of my picks:

  • Alertness, BHI Heel. Recommended for the temporary relief of mental fatigue, stress-related irritability and mental symptoms of excessive alcohol or nicotine consumption.
  • Calming, BHI Heel. Hyperactivity, Newton RX
  • Insomnia Chewable, Boericke and Tafel
  • Insomnia #31, Newton RX
  • Nervousness #31, Newton RX

Combination Herbal Supplements: Valerian, Hops, Passionflower, Chamomile, etc.
Helps with sleep and relaxation

  • Relaxing Sleep Tonic, Herb Pharm (Tincture 1 or 4 oz.)
  • Sedivitax, Abcoa

Valerian - Valerian is the root that Valium was patterned after. Studies show that it is a powerful, natural sedative, and is calming. It has fewer side effects that prescription medication and has been used safely for centuries.

  • Valerian Root, Pure Encapsulations, 250 mg.

Magnesium - 75% of us are magnesium deficient. When we become deficient, it becomes even more difficult to absorb. Use of choline citrate along with magnesium helps with absorption. People who are magnesium deficient typically have one or more of these signs: irritability, anxiety, feel tense—in mood and in muscles, sensitive to noise, may have constipation or muscle twitching, restless leg syndrome.

  • Mag Plus Guard, Perque coupled with Choline Citrate, Perque L-theanine L-theanine is an amino acid found in green tea. Studies show that 200 mg. as needed can help increase a sense of calmness and reduces anxiety, often within 15 minutes.
  • L-theanine, Douglas Labs, 100 mg.

Relora - Relora is a patented blend of two plants, Magnolia officinalis and Phellodendron amuernse. Studies have shown it to be safe and effective when used as needed to promote relaxation, and increase a sense of calmness and well being. It has also been shown to lower cortisol levels. Cortisol is a “stress” hormone. Dosage: 1-2 daily.

  • Relora, Douglas Labs, 500 mg.

5-HTP - 5-hydroxy tryptophan has been used to improve sleep patterns, for depression, and for people who have cravings for sweets. Take at night for insomnia, and during the day for depression. 5HTP is the precursor to serotonin, which is the precursor to melatonin. 5HTP should not be taken with medications that are SSRI’s (Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitors) like Prosac and Paxil. Dosage: typically 100-300 mg.

  • 5HTP, Pure Encapsulations, 100 mg.

Zinc - Studies show that people who are depressed have low blood zinc levels. Zinc also calms the nervous system and is highly useful in people with eating disorders, such as bulimia and anorexia.

  • Energized Double Zinc Guard, Perque - contains 25 mg. zinc picolinate and citrate, 3 mg. B6 (pyridoxyl 5 phosphate), and 2 mg. magnesium.

GABA - GABA (gamma-aminobutyric acid) may improve sleep quality. It also has a calming effect. Common tranquilizers, such as Valium and Librium, and calming herbs, such as valerian, work by stimulating GABA receptors in the brain. Dosages range from 2-18 grams daily. Begin slowly and add.

  • GABA, Douglas Laboratories, 500 mg.Aromatherapy

Vitamin B12 - The most effective way to take vitamin B12 is sublingually, under the tongue. Swallowed vitamin B12 is poorly absorbed. Vegetarians and many other people are deficient in this essential nutrient. Vitamin B12 deficiency symptoms include: pernicious anemia, poor immune function, mental deterioration, sleep disorders, reduced melatonin levels, erosion of mucosal areas (such as cervix, and colon), high homocysteine levels, fatigue, and reduced endurance.

  • Activated B-12 guard, Perque 2000 mcg., Sublingual lozenges

Aroma therapy - Studies show that breathing in vapors of essential oils can be relaxing and aid sleeping.

  • Deep Rest Synergistic Blend, Amrita Aroma therapy, 1/3 oz.

I break these down into 3 categories:

1. Two a Day Multiples

These are great for people who want something quick, but you’ll need to add calcium and magnesium. The minerals are bulky and there is only so much you can fit in two tablets/capsules a day!

I recommend the Perque Life-Guard Multi for people who have chronic health issues, auto-immune problems or need a superior, hypoallergenic product. For healthy people, the Designs for Health Twice Daily works well.

This is a great multi-mineral and bone formula. We hear much about calcium and vitamin D for bone formation. I recommend it for men and women.

Detoxification Products

Another way to help de-stress your body with supplements is through detoxification. This helps cleanse your body of chemical and physical stressors. Here are some recommended detox products.

Fish Oil/Omega 3 Fatty Acids
Fish oils have anti-pain, and anti-inflammatory effects. They help keep our nervous systems balanced and running smoothly. Omega 3 fatty acids are “essential” meaning we need them, but cannot manufacture them in our own bodies. Clinically, they have been used to protect heart, nervous systems, for brain function, vision, hair, skin, nails, and reproductive functioning.
